Una víbora en mi jardín / A viper in my garden

Estos días se empiezan a ver las primeras culebreras patrullando las laderas de la Montaña Oriental Leonesa, lo cual, unido a la climatología reinante, más veraniega que primaveral, me ha hecho recordar un encuentro fortuito del verano pasado con uno de los habitantes más especiales de nuestra querida cordillera Cantábrica. Me refiero a la víbora de Seoane, un endemismo cantábrico que es, al mismo tiempo, la serpiente más venenosa y mortífera de la península Ibérica.

These days the first Short Toed Eagles of the season can be watched patrolling the slopes of the Cantabrian mountains. This sightings, joint to the mild, even hot, weather of the last days have made me to remember a fortuit encounter of the last summer with one of the most special reptiles of this mountains, as it is the Seoane´s viper, a cantabrian endemism and the most poisonous snake of the Iberian peninsula.

Sucedió a principios de julio del año pasado, una tarde soleada en la que nos afanábamos por limpiar el prado que rodea la pequeña casa de montaña que mi familia tiene en el puerto de Tarna, en el límite entre Asturias y León. De pronto, al quitar un manojo de hierbas arraigado en la grieta de un muro, mi madre se llevó el susto de su vida al encontrarse cara a cara con una serpiente de tonos grises, pequeña y rechoncha que la miraba fijamente a pocos centímetros de distancia con la cabeza levantada, dispuesta a atacar. Inmediatamente se echó hacia atrás, mientras la serpiente se retiraba lentamente hacia lo alto del muro. Para nuestra sorpresa, cuando alcanzó la parte alta del muro se detuvo y se quedó completamente inmóvil durante más de media hora. Tiempo que yo aproveché para hacer más de 300 fotos desde todos los ángulos y con distintos objetivos, aunque las fotos más impactantes las conseguí con el macro, acercando el objetivo a apenas 20 cm del ofidio.

It happened in early July last year, a sunny afternoon while we were really busy working in the grassland patch sourrounding the small cottage that my family owned in Tarna pass, just on the border between Asturias and León. Suddenly, when my mother put off with her hands a bunch of herbs that grown in the crevices of a stone wall, she met face to face with a snake of grey tones, small and dumpy, looking fixedly to her at short distance, ready to attack. Quickly, she gave a step behind at the same time that the snake moved to the upper side of the wall and keep quiet during more than 30 min. I searched my camera and took hundreds of pictures from all the points of view, although the most impressive pictures were taken with a macro lens hardly 20cm away.

Podéis imaginaros la tensión con cada disparo y cada movimiento alrededor de la serpiente, pensando si las vibraciones del suelo podrían hacer reaccionar a la serpiente en cualquier momento. Pero también la increíble sensación y el disfrute de ver por el objetivo con todo detalle la paralizante mirada inconfundible de una víbora.

You can imagine the tension during each shot and with every movement around the snake, thinking if the vibrations over the ground could disturbe it, but also the incredible sensation and enjoyment of watching through the lens the freezing gaze of the viper.

A partir de las fotografías que os mostramos es posible asignar esta Seoane a la subespecie cantabrica, cuyo veneno es mucho más potente y letal incluso que en los ejemplares de la otra subespecie reconocida, la subsp. seoanei.

Using the pictures as a reference we could identificate the snake as Vipera seoanei cantabrica, whose venom its much more mortiferous and powerful than the other recognised subspecies Vipera seoanei seoanei.

Creo obligado terminar contando cómo acabó la historia. Fue justo cuando el sol ocultaba sus últimos rayos por detrás del Remelende, la montaña que preside el puerto de Tarna por el oeste. En ese momento, yo decidí que había llegado el momento de terminar la sesión fotográfica y empezar a plantearse la forma de invitar a tan honorable pero inquietante inquilino a cambiar nuestro prado por alguno de los pastizales cercanos, donde sin dudas iba a estar mucho más tranquila y a gusto. Pero justo entonces, la víbora pensó lo mismo y decidió concluir su baño de sol para retirarse a un pequeño agujero bajo tierra del que no me había percatado hasta entonces pero que tenía a solo unos centímetros de distancia. Así es que creo que seguimos compartiendo el prado desde entonces, respetando cada uno los horarios del otro para no coincidir más de lo necesario. De hecho, no la volvimos a ver en todo el verano. 

Finally, I feel obliged to tell about how finished the story. This occurred just as the sun hided behind Remelende, the mountain at the West side of the Tarna pass. In this moment, I finished taking photographs and begun to think how to move my new neighbour to a near meadow where it surely be safe and also us including my sons. But just in this moment, the snake must think the same and move slowly with inderence into a close vole hole where it quickly disappeared. So, at the present, I think that we continue being neighbours, although each one of us respect the schedules of the other to not coincide in the grassland at the same time. Indeed, we didn´t meet again during the rest of the summer.

Hides para aves mediterráneas/ Mediterranean birds hides.

Durante los últimos meses hemos estado preparando algunos hides fotográficos en la provincia de Almería que comienzan a dar sus frutos, las aves por fin comienzan a entrar a los bebederos con regularidad.

During the last months we have been installed some photographic hides in the south of Spain, Almeria, that are working perfect now, the birds finally begins to enter to the watering holes regulary.

Carracas, camachuelos trompeteros, cogujadas montesinas, roqueros solitarios, piquituertos, currucas, collalba negra, cernícalos primilla y otras muchas aves nos visitan día tras día ofreciéndonos excelentes imágenes en estas bellas tierras andaluzas.

Rollers, Trumpeter Finch, Thekla Lark, Blue Rock Thrush, Crossbills, Wablers,Black Weathear, Lesser Kestrel and other birds visit us everyday, and let us the opportunity of take incredible pictures during the last days.

Cabra montés y ciervo /Spanish Ibex and Red Deers

Os dejamos un par de vídeos de ungulados salvajes del Parque Regional de Picos de Europa, una cabra montés ( Capra pyrenaica) y un ciervo ( Elaphus elaphus).

Ambas especies han sido introducidas en la zona por motivos cinegéticos, adaptándose bien a su nuevo hábitat. En el pasado existió una subespecie de cabra montés en este sector de la Cordillera cantábrica ( Capra pyrenaica lusitanica), denominado coloquialmente como mueyu en el pasado. Los últimos ejemplares de esta subespecie fueron abatidos en el norte de Portugal en 1892.

Las densidades de ciervo han crecido considerablemente en los últimos años en la zona, considerándose en la actualidad como el principal factor de declive de algunas especies protegidas como el urogallo cantábrico o la perdiz pardilla.

Here are a some videos of wild ungulates taken at Picos of Europa Regional Park, a Spanish ibex or Wild goat ( Capra Pyrenaica) and a Red deer (Elaphus elaphus).

Both species has been introduced in this area for hunting, and are well adapted to this new habitat. In the past, in the cantabrian mountains lived a extincted subspecie of Spanish ibex ( Capra pyrenaica lusitanica), called commondly “mueyu”. The last ibex was hunted at the north of Portugal in 1892.

The Red deer densities has grown considerably during the last years in this area, nowadays it´s considerated as the main decline factor of some endangered species like cantabrian capercaillie or Spanish grey partridge.

Quebrantahuesos en los Pirineos catalanes/ Lammergeiers at Catalonian Pyrenees

Volamos a Barcelona, alquilamos un pequeño minibus y conducimos al norte adentrándonos en los Pirineos. Llegamos a nuestro destino, mientras que la noche se nos echaba encima. A la mañana siguiente pudimos observar el entorno que nos rodeaba y comenzamos observar fauna pirenaica.

We flew to Barcelona, rented a small minibus and drove north into the Pyrenees. We arrived at our destination under the cover of darkness. When morning arrived the scenery revealed itself and the wildlife watching commenced.

Nuestro alojamiento es una típica casa de montaña en lo alto de una pequeña colina, en un antiguo pueblo abandonado llamado Buseu en el prepirineo catalan al que llegamos por una zigzageante carretera de montaña.

Our accommodation was in a mountain house perched on a hill top at an old village called Buseu in the foothills of the Spanish Pyrenees. It was quite an adventure arriving in the dark – we climbed and zig-zagged our way up a narrow mountain road, and at a height of around 4000ft we reached our mountain hacienda. 

Fue una noche gélida, quizás menos tres o cuatro bajo cero, probablemente el doble  que en el fondo de los valles. Esperando en el porche de la casa, antes de salir con las primeras luces del día podías sentir el frio y seco aire de la montaña. Al Este, sobre las distantes cumbres montañosas se observaban los primeros signos del amanecer. Observando estas distantes cadenas montañosas somos capaces de divisar los primeros buitres leonados, aprovechando las corrientes térmicas y despegando desde sus posadero en los cañones rocosos del fondo del valle.

It was frosty overnight, maybe minus three or four Celsius. I expect double that in the valley bottoms. Standing on the veranda, under the first of the early morning light you could feel the cold dry mountain air. To the east, over distant mountain ridges there were the first signs of sun rise and a spectacular alpen glow. Scanning these distant ridges you were able to spot griffon vultures soaring on the first thermals from their roosts in the canyons. 

Después de un rápido desayuno, y preparar nuestro almuerzo, nos dispusimos a disfrutar del día. Las totovías y los escribanos montesinos cantaban y revoloteaban en una pradera cercana. Observamos los piquituertos posados en un pino cercano, mientras que los ciervos pastaban en una colina cercana a la casa. Los buitres al menos 100, volaban altos en círculos , obviamente disfrutando del sol matutino. El cielo se mostraba despejado y los montes del alto pirineo, cubiertos de blanco por la nieve, mostraban un contorno enormemente definido debido al bajo ángulo de luz del sol.

After a quick breakfast, and packing our lunch, we set out to enjoy the day. Woodlarks and rock buntings sang and flitted on the small alpine meadow. Crossbills perched on a nearby pine. Red deer grazed on a hillside high above the house. The vultures, now at least 100 of them circled high in a spiralling kettle, obviously enjoying the first of the early morning sun. The sky was cloudless and the peaks of high Pyrenees were white with snow and their jagged ridgelines were incredibly sharp with the low angle of the sun.

 Nuestro plan para este día era observar y fotografiar buitres desde tres hides especialmente diseñados e instalados alrededor de un muladar. Jordi, el guía, nos acompañó a los escondites para posteriormente cebar el muladar, ante la atenta mirada de los buitres que se comenzaban a concentrar sobre nuestras cabezas volando en círculo. Habitualmente durante el invierno se alimenta a los buitres una vez por semana, pero esta vez llevaban más de nueve días sin alimentarse por lo que estaban hambrientos.

Cuando Jordi abandono el muladar apenas tuvimos unos instantes para preparar los trípodes y las cámaras y la primera oleada de buitres descendió hacia el comedero. En unos minutos había al menos treinta aves sobre el suelo, correteando y aleteando . Al menos otros 100 más, planeaban sobre nuestras cabezas. La comida se agotaba rápidamente, pero en un momento dado tan pronto como bajaron los primeros buitres estos se retiraron a las copas de los árboles cercanos, entrando nuevas oleadas de buitres al muladar. Este patrón de comportamiento se alargó durante toda la mañana ofreciéndonos excelentes oportunidades para observar y fotografiar buitres. Mas tarde, los quebrantahesos comenzaron a planear junto a los buitres sobre el comedero y al menos dos buitres negros fueron vistos entre ellos. Durante la mayor parte de la tarde observamos quebrantahuesos de diferentes edades y plumajes volando, posados o aterrizando a menos de 20 m de nuestros escondites. Algunos recogían huesos y los tragaban allí mismo, mientras que otros los cogían con las garras y volaban con ellos lejos del muladar, los quebrantahuesos son especialistas en romper los husos y devorar el tuétano de su interior.

Our plan for the day was to observe and photograph vultures from three specially designed hides built around a feeding station. Jordi, our guide showed us into the hides and then put out a huge variety of food for the vultures which were now circling directly overhead.  Jordi feeds them (bones, meat, fat, carcasses…) about once a week throughout the winter but it had been nine days since they were fed so they were hungry – very hungry! When jordi had left, we barely had time to set up our cameras and the first wave of griffons descended for a feed. Within minutes, there was around thirty on the ground running, jumping and squabbling over the food. Another hundred or so circled overhead. The feeding frenzy lasted some twenty minutes and then as suddenly as it started it was over. Most vultures retired to the nearby trees but within a few minutes more vultures descended for a feed. This pattern continued for most of the morning and it offered fantastic views and ample opportunities for photography. Later in the morning, lammergeiers started to circle with the griffons and at least two black vultures were seen. For most of the afternoon we watched lammergeiers (in seven different plumages) flying, talon grasping, and landing within 20meters of our hides to feed. Some would pick up bones and swallow them there, while others would pick up bones and fly away with them. It was fascinating to see how evolution has made the griffon into a scavenger and the lammergeier into a specialist on scavenging bones from carcasses.

A lo largo de la semana pasamos muchas más horas en los escondites  y nos deleitamos tomando algunas sensacionales imágenes. Los escondites están específicamente pensados para observación y fotografía, con un gran cristal espía panorámico de gran calidad que impide que los buitres y córvidos detecten nuestra presencia en e interior.

Throughout the week we enjoyed many more hours in the vulture hides and we were delighted to take some stunning images too. The hides are built for both observation and photography. A large one way glass window is built into each hide so you can sit back and enjoy the show outside while the birds are oblivious to you inside.

Pero hubo tiempo para otras cosas,  bajo los interminables cielos azules del Pirineo, invertimos tiempo en explorar y buscar fauna salvaje en los vastos bosques mixtos y profundos cañones rocosos de la zona. Las rapaces eran abundantes, azores, águilas reales, ratoneros, cernícalos o milanos reales, por citar algunos. Uno de los días nos sentimos muy felices por ver un quebrantahuesos en el nido. Los agateadores comunes, verderones serranos y verderones serranos fueron algunas de las especies forestales observadas.

Under endless blue skies we spent time exploring and searching for wildlife in the vast mixed forests and deep canyons. Raptors were plentiful – goshawk, golden eagle, common buzzard, kestrel, red kite - to name a few. One day we were very lucky to observe a lammergeier sitting on a nest. Short-toed treecreepers, citril finches and large flocks of crossbills were some of the forest specials. A single wallcreeper was seen on two occasions in a deep limestone gorge and this proved to be a major highlight of the week.

En el camino de vuelta a Barcelona cruzamos las grandes estepas cerealistas de Lleida, donde nos encontramos con sisones, alondras, alcaudones y diversas aves de presa. Mas tarde esa tarde con el sol ya bajo nos acercamos a uno de los humedales de la zona  disfrutamos una larga tarde observando patos, cigüeñas, garcetas, cormoranes y aguiluchos laguneros. En los campos circundantes también observamos pájaros moscones, ruiseñores bastardos y rascones europeos.

En route back to Barcelona we passed through the open ‘steppe’ country where we encountered little bustard, various larks, shrikes and raptors. Late that afternoon and with the sun low in the sky we went to a wetland reserve and enjoyed a large evening roost of ducks, storks, egrets, cormorants and marsh harriers. In the reed beds surrounding the wetland we also saw penduline tits, cetti’s warbler and water rail. 

Finalmente, después de facturar nuestro equipaje en el aeropuerto de Barcelona, disfrutamos una breve visita a un humedal cercano lleno de patos y zancudas que habían hecho una parada en su migración al norte de Europa. Pero ahora nos tocaba a nosotros dirigirnos al norte también y volver a casa y disfrutar de los recuerdos y fotografías tomadas después de este memorable viaje.

Finally, after checking our bags in at Barcelona airport we enjoyed a brief visit to a nearby wetland full of waders and ducks on their northward migration. But now it was time for us to head north too and back home. But on a journey home one is often full of contemplation and satisfaction after a successful and memorable trip.

Dibujando aves rapaces en Monfragüe / Sketching raptors in Monfragüe

Uno de los grandes alicientes de la feria de turismo ornitológico de Extremadura (FIO) es la posibilidad que brinda al visitante de escaparse a los principales puntos de observación del Parque Nacional por unas horas para disfrutar de especies a las que muchos no estamos habituados por vivir en el norte. Asimismo, es un modo de escapar por unos días del invierno para abrir una ventana a la primavera. Bandadas de golondrinas en los cielos, cogujadas cantando sobre las carpas de la feria, roqueros solitarios lanzando sus trinos desde los mismos acantilados donde ya han nacido los pollos de los buitres leonados...

One of the great attractions of the Ornithological Tourism Fair of Extremadura (FIO) is the opportunity it offers to the visitor to enjoy species that people like us, living in the North of Spain, are not used to observe. It is also a way to relish the early Spring for a few days. Flocks of Swallows and House Martins in the skies, Crested Larks singing over the tents of the fair, Blue Rock Thrushes launching their chirping from the same cliffs where the Griffon Vultures have already born their chickens,...

En esta entrada os muestro apuntes de algunas de estas observaciones. Dibujar lo que uno ve en el campo es una de las mejores formas de disfrutar de la naturaleza y ayuda a fijar en la memoria recuerdos imborrables de pequeños momentos dedicados a la observación. Luego, estos dibujos constituyen la mejor fuente de información sobre la que basar una ilustración o una pintura más elaborada.

This time, I would like to show you some sketches reflecting interesting species observed these days in Monfragüe. To draw what one watch in the field is one of the best ways to enjoy nature and help to fix unforgettable memories of small moments dedicated to wildlife observation. Later, these sketches are the best and first source of information on which to base an illustration or a more elaborated painting.

Esta pareja de alimoches descansaba en lo alto de los riscos de la Tajadilla el sábado por la mañana. En el norte ya hemos visto algunos ejemplares pero aquí parece que ya están asentados en sus territorios de cría.

This pair of Egyptian Vultures rested on the top of the crags of La Tajadilla on Saturday morning. In the North of Spain we have already watched few birds this year, but here they already seem to have settled their breeding territories.

El águila imperial es un ave majestuosa. No siempre es posible disponer de tiempo suficiente para tomar unos apuntes, por rápidos que se hagan, pero en esta ocasión el macho de la Portilla del Tiétar me permitió hacer varios dibujos mientras vigilaba desde lo alto de la peña tras el primer vuelo de la mañana.

The Spanish Imperial Eagle is a majestic bird. It is not always possible to have enough time to take some quickly sketches, but in this occasion the male of Portilla del Tietar pair allowed me to do several drawings while guarding from the top of the cliffs after the first flight of the morning.

Y en este apunte se puede ver la cabeza de un búho real, seguramente el más famoso de Monfragüe, mientras incuba a la entrada de una cueva y nos observa indiferente, seguramente buscando algo con que distraerse para dejar volar las horas.

Last, this sketch shows the head of an impressive Eagle Owl, probably the most famous Eagle Owl of Monfragüe, while incubated at the entrance of a cave. It was dedicated to observe the surroundings with indifference, probably looking for some distraction to let fly the hours.

La perdiz valiente/ the brave partridge

El pasado fin de semana tuvimos la oportunidad de observar una pareja de águilas imperiales en la zona de los balcones del Tietar, en el Parque Nacional de Monfragüe.

The past weekend we had the opportunity of watching an imperial eagle pair near of the “balcones del Tietar” in Monfragüe National Park.

El día amaneció nublado, no demasiado adecuado para la observación, pero nada más llegar y tras mirar con detenimiento las paredes rocosas de la zona en busca del búho real, escuchamos rápidamente el reclamos del águila imperial, enfrascada en múltiples batallas con la colonia de buitres leonados de la zona.

The morning was cloudy, not very good for the observation, but as soon as we arrived and after watching carefully the rocky walls searching the eagle owls, we listened the call of the imperial eagle, busy with several battles with the vultures of a nearby colony.

Más tarde el macho de águila imperial se posó en un risco dedicándose a descansar y a otear estos maravillosos valles extremeños, molestado de tanto en cuanto por las carroñeras y otros córvidos.

Later the imperial eagle male landed on a crag spending it´s time resting and looking down over this beautiful valleys, bothered by corvids and vultures.

Sorprendentemente el posadero lo comparte con una valiente perdiz roja en celo que se afana reclamar a otras de su especie a apenas unos metros de la gran rapaz ibérica.

Surprisingly the crag is shared with a brave partridge in rut, very busy calling to other partridges just two or three meters far from the eagle.

WildWatching Spain en la FIO/ WWS in the Extremadura Birdwatching Fair

Este año WildWatching Spain ha estado presente en la Feria Internacional de Ornitología de Extremadura que se celebra en la localidad cacereña de VillarReal de San Carlos en el corazón del Parque Nacional de Monfragüe.

This year, WildWatching Spain has been present in the Extremadura Birdwatching Fair that took place in Villarreal of San Carlos in the heart of Monfragüe National Park.

Durante dos días, compartimos experiencias y ofrecimos nuestros productos turísticos al abundante público que se acercó a la presente edición de la feria a la que también acudieron los organismos de promoción turística de las diferentes comunidades autónomas, distribuidores de productos ópticos y fotográficos y diversas entidades conservacionistas. Desde aquí queremos agradecer su interés a todas las personas que pasaron por nuestro stand para conocer de primera mano nuestra propuesta de viajes y actividades, así como para desearnos suerte en esta aventura en la que estamos embarcados.

During two days, we share experiences and offer our birding and wildlife observation products to the public that came this year to the fair, where were also present optic and photographic dealers, regional tourism organizations and non governmental organizations. With these lines we wish to express our appreciation to all the people who visited our stand and show their interest in our activity and travels.

Los amaneceres y anocheceres los aprovechamos para visitar el Parque Nacional y disfrutar de la observación de águilas imperiales, buitres negros, búhos reales, alimoches o roqueros solitarios entre otros. De todo ello os daremos cuenta en próximas entradas de este blog. No os las perdáis porque estoy seguro de que os resultarán tan sorprendentes como a nosotros cuando las vivimos en directo.
